{"id":1355,"date":"2026-05-10T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/2026\/05\/10\/when-michael-keaton-and-glenn-close-scrapped-over-the-paper\/"},"modified":"2026-05-10T18:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-10T18:00:00","slug":"when-michael-keaton-and-glenn-close-scrapped-over-the-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/ja\/2026\/05\/10\/when-michael-keaton-and-glenn-close-scrapped-over-the-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"When Michael Keaton and Glenn Close Scrapped Over \u2018The Paper\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p> \tMore than three decades ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ron-howard\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ron-howard_1\" data-tag=\"ron-howard\">Ron Howard<\/a> decided that a story about a fictional New York City tabloid was just his type. <em>The Paper<\/em> centered on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/michael-keaton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_michael-keaton_1\" data-tag=\"michael-keaton\">Michael Keaton<\/a> \u2014 in his third film with Howard \u2014 as Henry Hackett, metro editor of the <em>New York Sun<\/em>, who navigates a motley roster of colleagues, including his nemesis in managing editor Alicia Clark (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/glenn-close\/\" id=\"auto-tag_glenn-close_1\" data-tag=\"glenn-close\">Glenn Close<\/a>), over a 24-hour period to get that day\u2019s edition to newsstands.<\/p>\n<p> \tAfter directing Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in 1992\u2019s <em>Far and Away<\/em>, Howard was itching to do a film about a newspaper that harkened back to titles like Cary Grant\u2019s 1940 comedy <em>His Girl Friday<\/em>. Steven Spielberg introduced Howard to <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> screenwriter David Koepp, who was working on the script for <em>The Paper<\/em> with brother Stephen Koepp, a <em>Time<\/em> magazine editor. After reading their screenplay about a male-dominated newsroom, Howard appreciated the balance of comedy, drama and suspense and tells <em>THR<\/em> that he gave one major note: \u201cGlenn\u2019s part was written as a male character, but David and Stephen loved my idea of casting Glenn without changing a single attitude, behavior or line.\u201d  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tMarisa Tomei, Randy Quaid and Robert Duvall rounded out the cast for the movie that included cameos from Graydon Carter and other media notables. To prepare, Howard spent time in the real newsrooms of the <em>Daily News<\/em> and <em>New York Post<\/em> and studied the 1928 Broadway comedy <em>The Front Page<\/em> that was the basis for <em>His Girl Friday<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p> \tA pivotal scene in <em>The Paper <\/em>involves Keaton and Close coming to blows over publishing a contentious front-page story, and Howard recalls Keaton pulling him aside after a few takes of their fistfight: \u201cHe said, \u2018Ron, if you can, hold down the number of takes because Glenn is going full throttle. And let me tell you, she\u2019s seriously strong!\u2019 \u201d  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tUniversal released <em>The Paper<\/em> on March 18, 1984, and it made $48 million at the global box office ($107 million today). <em>THR<\/em>\u2018s review praised the feature as \u201ctight and entertaining\u201d with a \u201cbanner cast.\u201d Although he\u2019s disappointed that the film didn\u2019t make a bigger splash at the box office, Howard notes that it overperformed \u201cin the seven cities where newspapers still mattered culturally.\u201d He adds, \u201cI continue to hear good things about it, especially from actors and journalists, which always makes me proud.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> \t<em>This story appeared in the May 6 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriptions.hollywoodreporter.com\/site\/thr-subscribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to subscribe<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than three decades ago, Ron Howard decided that a story about a fictional New York City tabloid was just his type.
