\tJohn Oliver<\/a> aired a years-long grievance he evidently has with Legally Blonde<\/a> 2: Red, White & Blonde<\/em> \u2014 yes, you read that right \u2014\u00a0on Sunday\u2019s Last Week Tonight.<\/em><\/p>\n

\tThe HBO host\u2019s main segment focused on the Supreme Court, specifically something called shadow dockets. <\/p>\n

\t\u201cThe Court has been repeatedly jumping into ongoing cases to say, \u2018You know what, while this works its way through the courts, Trump should get to do the thing that he wants to do anyway,’\u201d Oliver explained. \u201cIt\u2019s basically a football referee saying, \u2018Pending a final ruling on the legality of the quarterback having a gun, I\u2019m just gonna stand back and see where he\u2019s going with this.’\u201d \t<\/p>\n

\tThat\u2019s where the shadow docket comes in, Oliver noted, adding that to understand what that is, viewers should be reminded how the Supreme Court decides cases.<\/p>\n

\tOliver then showed a CNN clip where the reporter explained the process, staring out by saying, \u201cWhen you think of a Supreme Court case, you\u2019re thinking of a case on the merits docket.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tThe reporter then explained how the case starts in district court, then gets appealed to a circuit court and gets petitioned be heard by the Supreme Court justices, who write briefs, make arguments, ask questions and meet to discuss the case before voting on it. After, they write long opinions and dissents based on how they voted.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cYeah, that is very basically it,\u201d Oliver said. \u201cAlthough one small thing there: Saying, \u2018When you think of a Supreme Court case, you\u2019re thinking of the merits docket,\u2019 excuse me, you don\u2019t know what I\u2019m thinking of when I think of the Supreme Court, especially as what I\u2019m actually thinking about is how the sequel to Legally Blonde <\/em>\u2014 Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde <\/em>\u2014 dropped the ball by not having Elle Woods argue a case in front of it,\u201d he added of the 2003 movie starring Reese Witherspoon<\/a>. \t<\/p>\n

\t\u201cCome on, guys!\u201d he continued his rant. \u201cThe best part of the first movie is the murder trial, and the sequel has no trial scenes? You set the movie in D.C. and don\u2019t let Elle show what she can do in front of the highest court in the land? That is madness.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cAnyway, that is what I\u2019m always thinking of when I think of a Supreme Court case, the one I\u2019m eventually gonna bring against the producers of Legally Blonde 2 <\/em>for not putting Reese in a position to succeed.<\/p>\n
