The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that she died by suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than shy away from the difficult conversation, Short spoke openly about the reality of mental illness and the long struggle his daughter faced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife\u2019s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could, until she couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That perspective comes from experience.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p> <iframe title=\"Martin Short: Facing tragedy with joy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-cookieconsent=\"statistics, marketing\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EekxjuyJUuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><div class=\"cookieconsent-optout-statistics cookieconsent-optout-marketing\">Please accept <a href=\"javascript:Cookiebot.renew()\">statistics, marketing<\/a> cookies to watch this video.<\/div> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Short lost his wife, Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010, and during the interview he reflected on parallels between the two devastating losses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, Nan\u2019s last words to me were, \u2018Martin, let me go,\u2019\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd what [Katherine] was just saying [was], \u2018Dad, let me go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Short also said the tragedy has strengthened his desire to change how mental illness is discussed publicly.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that he has \u201ca deep desire\u201d to take \u201cmental health out of the shadows\u201d so people are not \u201cashamed\u201d to talk about it. He added: \u201cNot hiding from the word suicide, but accepting that this can be the last stage of an illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actor, who has endured more than his share of personal loss over the years, also reflected on how overwhelming the past several months have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s staggering,\u201d he said, before adding: \u201cYou just have to breathe in, breathe out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite largely staying out of the spotlight, Katherine built a career helping others.
