{"id":1623,"date":"2026-05-14T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T17:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/2026\/05\/14\/asia-argento-to-executive-produce-gia-carangi-doc-exclusive\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T17:30:00","slug":"asia-argento-to-executive-produce-gia-carangi-doc-exclusive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/ja\/2026\/05\/14\/asia-argento-to-executive-produce-gia-carangi-doc-exclusive\/","title":{"rendered":"Asia Argento to Executive Produce Gia Carangi Doc (Exclusive)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p> \t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/asia-argento-anthony-bourdain-documentary-1234982277\/\">Asia Argento<\/a> has signed on as executive producer on Rosita Larocca\u2019s directorial debut feature documentary <em>Gia \u2013 The Shadow of Beauty<\/em>, about late U.S. supermodel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/makeup-artist-sandy-linter-recalls-gia-carangi-romance-we-did-love-1297324\/\">Gia Carangi<\/a> (1960\u20131986). <\/p>\n<p> \tThe doc, a U.S.-Italy co-production unveiled earlier this year, approaches her \u201cnot as a pop-cultural icon but as a young woman navigating desire, abandonment and visibility in 1980s New York.\u201d With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\">international<\/a> financing still open, the project is being presented to potential partners at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/cannes-market-2026-marche-du-film-creator-economy-summit-1236553744\/\">Cannes\u2019 March\u00e9 du Film<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<p> \t\u201cRejecting the conventions of the celebrity biopic, the film is conceived as a subjective encounter rather than a linear reconstruction of Carangi\u2019s life,\u201d according to a description of the film whose logline is: \u201cThis is the story of a girl who only wanted to be seen.\u201d \u201cIt reframes her meteoric rise and early death through the lens of an era \u2013 and an image-driven industry \u2013 ill-equipped to accommodate vulnerability, queerness and contradiction.\u201d  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tThe creative team is not so much interested in nostalgia but feels there is a timely urgency behind revisiting the model\u2019s life. \u201cIn an era dominated by self-performance, aesthetic optimization and algorithmic visibility, Gia emerges as both a warning and an embrace,\u201d highlight press notes about the project. They describe her as \u201ca queer figure who \u2018shone before there was even a name for it,\u2019 and whose struggle resonates with younger generations confronting addiction, anxiety and the pressure to define themselves prematurely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tActress and filmmaker Argento will bring \u201cmentorship and creative support\u201d to the project. L.A.-based Italian actress and model Marta Pozzan (<em>From Scratch<\/em>) will appear in the film as a presence who \u201cseeks\u201d Carangi in \u201ca posthumous dialogue combining testimonies, archival material and dreamlike visual reconstructions,\u201d according to the creative team.   \t<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Rosita-Larocca.jpg\" alt srcset data-lazy-sizes height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"> \t\t\t \t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> \t \t\t\t\t\t<span>Rosita Larocca, courtesy of the \u2018Gia \u2013 The Shadow of Beauty\u2019 team<\/span> \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \t\u201cThe actress doesn\u2019t judge Gia or explain her from the outside,\u201d explains Larocca, signaling that the doc will reject a focus on scandal and sensationalism. \u201cShe seeks her. Talks to her. Listens to her \u2014 like an older sister walking in her shadow.\u201d The creative team also highlights: This is not a biography, but a rebirth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tCarangi, often referred to as one of the world\u2019s first supermodels, was widely known simply as Gia. She burst onto the scene in the late 1970s, traveled the world, posed for famous photographers and magazines, and led campaigns for the likes of Dior and Versace. Carangi died of AIDS at the age of 26 after battling a heroin addiction. Angelina Jolie and Mila Kunis portrayed her in the 1998 HBO film <em>Gia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p> \tProduced by Italy\u2019s Artex, the doc <em>Gia \u2013 The Shadow of Beauty<\/em> is U.S. executive-produced by Lizzy Harris through her banner Pool Creative (<em>The First Monday in May<\/em>).
