Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho was named Best Director for his <em>The Secret Agent<\/em> and Wagner Moura was named Best Actor for leading the same film in what were both firsts for a nation that prides itself on its cinema and has done since the industry first took root there in the late 1890s.<\/p>\n<p> \tFilho\u2019s layered, nuanced political thriller showcased the strength of contemporary Brazilian cinema and built on the success enjoyed globally by veteran filmmaker Walter Salles\u2019 <em>I\u2019m Still Here<\/em>, which came to the Cannes market last year as the nation\u2019s first-ever Best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\">International<\/a> Feature Film Oscar winner, and was duly picked up by Sony Pictures Classics\u00a0for North American and international markets.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tHeads were also turned towards Brazil\u2019s role as Country of Honor\u00a0at the\u00a02025 March\u00e9 du and the now industry is determined to keep the world\u2019s focus fixed in 2026. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tBrazilian production company RT Features is leading the way this year, with Dominga Sotomayor\u2019s lyrical tale of a woman haunted by childhood trauma <em>La Perra<\/em> \u2014 starring <em>I\u2019m Still Here\u2019s <\/em>Selton Mello \u2014 in the\u00a0Directors\u2019 Fortnight and the international crime drama, and Brazilian co-production, <em>Paper Tiger<\/em>, directed by James Gray, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett<strong>,<\/strong> in\u00a0Competition.<\/p>\n<p> \tThe buzz continues to build, and Ilda Santiago, executive director programming and international projects at the Festival do Rio is keen to explain how the domestic industry in Brazil continues to expand in terms of confidence and creativity.  \t<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/The-Secret-Agent-MCDSEAG_EC201-H-2025.jpg?w=1296\" alt srcset data-lazy-sizes height=\"730\" width=\"1296\" decoding=\"async\"> \t\t\t \t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> \t \t\t\t\t\t<span>\u2018The Secret Agent\u2019<\/span> \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite>Neon\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/cite> \t\t\t\t\t \t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \t\u201cBrazilian cinema is being regarded in a higher level and has created great expectations for the coming years but we have been around for a long time,\u201d she says. \u201cAs much as we might see it as a surprise, it is not. We have lived through bad and good years, in government, public policies and internal issues. However, creativity and the desire to tell stories never failed us, as well as the strength to keep going. So Brazil\u2019s industry became stronger and more resilient and now we can be more confident that our stories do have an interest for the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tThere\u2019s a full schedule of screenings and events along the Croisette this year that Santiago believes will support those claims. With the support of\u00a0RioFilme, Santiago and her team are, for the second year running, bringing five projects in post-production stages to be presented in the Goes to Cannes program on May 15 \u2014 all hoping to emulate the success of C\u00edntia Domit Bittar\u2019s project <em>Virtuosas<\/em>, which claimed the initiative\u2019s top prize in 2025.<\/p>\n<p> \tThis year\u2019s slate includes Jeferson De\u2019s biopic <em>Carolina Maria de Jesus<\/em>\u00a0and Jo Serfaty\u2019s eco-themed drama <em>Beyond the Edge<\/em> \u2014 both Brazil-France co-productions \u2014 as well as the Maju de Paiva-Bernardo Florim-directed horror <em>Days of Fire, <\/em>Thais Fujinaga\u2019s family drama <em>Talented, <\/em>and the F\u00e1bio Mendon\u00e7a-helmed thriller <em>The Character<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Festival-do-Rio.jpg?w=3000\" alt srcset data-lazy-sizes height=\"1688\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"> \t\t\t \t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> \t \t\t\t\t\t<span>Festival do Rio<\/span> \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \tOther Brazilian initiatives include the Dejeuner Carioca lunch \u2014 also on May 15 and hosted by Globo, Festival do Rio and RioFilme with the aim of providing a platform for networking. It\u2019s invitation only and will feature speakers including Santiago,\u00a0Alex Medeiros\u00a0and\u00a0Gabriel Jacome \u2014 respectively director of drama, documentaries, and film, and director of TV content at Brazilian broadcast giants Globo \u2014 and\u00a0Leonardo Edde, RioFilme\u2019s president director.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tFestival do Rio is also behind the Matinee Bresil program on May 18 \u2014 with support from Globo,\u00a0RioFilme,\u00a0Spcine,\u00a0Embratur, and the\u00a0Ministry of Culture of the Brazilian Government \u2014 and it will feature a day full of panels and presentations as the organization \u201ccontinues the strategic efforts to position Brazilian audiovisual content on the global stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tStantiago is, of course, keen to talk up the attractions of her home city, too, after it was used as a backdrop for Sales\u2019 <em>I\u2019m Still Here, <\/em>and for other locally produced classics including<em> City of God (2002) <\/em>and Salles\u2019<em> Central Station in 1998. <\/em>The locals will tell you Rio is Brazil\u2019s cinema city, and Festival do Rio\u2019s fact sheet tells us 10 per cent of Brazil\u2019s cinemas can be found in the city, serving 16 per cent of the overall market, and up to 1.46 million viewers.<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Ainda-Estou-Aqui-film-still-edited.jpg\" alt srcset data-lazy-sizes height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"> \t\t\t \t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> \t \t\t\t\t\t<span>\u2018Im Still Here\u2019<\/span> \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \t\u201cRio de Janeiro has always been at the heart of Brazilian cinema,\u201d says Santiago. \u201cIt was a meeting point for the great energy and talent during the Cinema Novo movement, a time of cultural effervescence in Brazil which drastically changed our perception of the world \u2014 and of ourselves \u2014 in the 1960s. Over the decades, Rio has become a recognizable postcard for Brazil, and the backdrop for a slew of productions and for the discussion of Brazilian cinema\u2019s politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tThat creative legacy, Santiago argues, is now a competitive advantage. \u201cIt\u2019s a city which reflects the country\u2019s social contrasts and its diversity. A city which has created passion and fantasy across the planet. Rio continues to be a creative hub, with a strong audiovisual ecosystem that includes production companies, studios, and talent. Rio is a great location but goes much beyond it.\u201d  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tIt\u2019s also a city keen to welcome international filmmakers \u2014 having been used in the past for blockbusters like <em>Fast Five<\/em> (2011) and <em>The Incredible Hulk<\/em> (2008). Rio boasts a number of major studios and last year hosted 28 international productions. Meanwhile, the official claim is 90 percent of the country\u2019s office revenue came from films produced in the city from 1995 to 2024<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> \tIncentives include an injection of the equivalent to 30 percent of audiovisual production expenses by RioFilme into \u201celigible expenses within the city of Rio de Janeiro\u201d while \u201cfor production proposals where the city of Rio de Janeiro is the main location, the amount invested by RioFilme may correspond to 35 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Rio-beach.jpg?w=3000\" alt srcset data-lazy-sizes height=\"1688\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"> \t\t\t \t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption> \t \t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p> \t\u201cRiofilme\u00a0\u2014 through the\u00a0Rio Film Commission\u00a0\u2014 offers a solid cash rebate and the logistical support for any production,\u201d explains Santiago. \u201cFrom locations to studios and high-level equipment: it\u2019s all here. We are eager to welcome crews and creatives from all over the world and from other parts of Brazil. Special co-production agreements can also be considered depending on the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tThe results are starting to show.<\/p>\n<p> \tAdds Santiago: \u201cRio has ranked high [globally] on the number of shooting days over the last years and the number of international productions coming here to use the city in different locations is growing.
