\tTrey Parker<\/a> and Matt Stone<\/a> had only intended for one episode of South Park<\/a><\/em> to focus on the show\u2019s depiction of President Donald Trump<\/a>, but the high-profile pushback led them to double down throughout the rest of the year.<\/p>\n

\tThe co-creators of the Comedy Central<\/a> program sat down with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Mike De Luca<\/a> for a conversation during the South Park<\/em> Emmy Official FYC event in Los Angeles<\/a> on Tuesday. A self-proclaimed South Park <\/em>super fan, De Luca chatted with the pair about last year\u2019s seasons 27 and 28, which marked record ratings and made national headlines for the show as it took aim<\/a> at President Donald Trump and his cohorts. \t<\/p>\n

\t\u201cWe were just going to do that first show with the Trump stuff,\u201d Parker said. \u201cWe laid into him so hard, and the thing became: \u2018Well, who\u2019s the bully now?\u2019 It became this just totally juvenile joke of like, \u2018We\u2019re not gonna stop. We\u2019re going to do it every single week<\/em>.\u2019 Even when everyone\u2019s like, \u2018OK, guys, move on,\u2019 [we\u2019re] like, \u2018Nope, we\u2019re not moving on. We\u2019re going to keep going, going, going.’\u201d As the audience broke into applause, he added, \u201cThat became the joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tAfter a two-year hiatus, South Park<\/em> aired its first season 27 episode in July and debuted its version of Trump, who was in bed with Satan when the show featured a deepfake version of the commander in chief with an exposed penis. In a statement the next day, the White House publicly voiced disapproval<\/a> in declaring that the show \u201cis hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tParker said of uproar from Trump\u2019s supporters, \u201cTo me, that was the whole season, was that they kept reacting, and we were like, \u2018Well, God damn it. All right, we\u2019ll do it some more.’\u201d \t<\/p>\n

\tStone concurred, noting that he and Parker have been clear since the boundary-pushing show first premiered in 1997 that they would rather lose everything than play it safe. \u201cIt was a bully mentality,\u201d Stone told the crowd about the mindset of the duo, who are longtime friends, dating back to their Colorado roots. \u201cWe don\u2019t care. We don\u2019t give a fuck. We say it all the time. We\u2019re not irresponsible, but we\u2019ll go back to Colorado. We don\u2019t give a fuck.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tHe also noted that the pair were willing to use their platform to voice frustrations with the political climate, despite a potential risk of losing the show: \u201c[With] last season, the thing that felt powerful about it wasn\u2019t just that we\u2019re going to say this thing or we\u2019re going to go there [but] that we\u2019re going to throw our show on the table.\u201d <\/p>\n

\tParker pointed out that the start to season 27 was particularly fraught, given that the release of new episodes was delayed as the pair worked out a new deal with Paramount<\/a> amid a tense dispute over streaming rights. The season premiere aired July 23, mere hours after news broke about Parker and Stone\u2019s production company, Park County, inking a deal with the studio for a reported $1.5 billion. <\/p>\n

\t\u201cSouth Park<\/em> was either going to be done \u2014 right then and there, that was it \u2014 or we were going to get like a $1.5 billion deal,\u201d Parker quipped, leading to audience laughter. \u201cStressful, is what it was.\u201d \t<\/p>\n

\tThe duo appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! <\/em>earlier this week, where they revealed that South Park<\/em> season 29 will premiere Sept. 16<\/a> on Comedy Central. Given that an episode of the show famously gets made just days before it airs, the co-creators admitted that they wouldn\u2019t have a plan for the new six-episode season until much closer to the deadline. Parker elicited laughter when he said, \u201cWe\u2019ll start thinking about it Sept. 2nd-ish.\u201d <\/p>\n

\tDuring a conversation last summer at San Diego Comic-Con, Parker recalled getting feedback from network brass<\/a> on the season 27 premiere showing Trump\u2019s anatomy: \u201cThey were like, \u2018We\u2019re gonna blur the penis,\u2019 and we\u2019re like, \u2018No, you\u2019re not gonna blur the penis.’\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
