\tEverytime<\/a><\/em>, a drama about grief from fast-rising Austrian director Sandra Wollner (The Trouble With Being Born<\/a><\/em>), took top honors for best film at Cannes\u2019 Un Certain Regard section for emerging talent and innovative works. <\/p>\n

\tThe feature, starring Birgit Minichmayr, Lotte Keiling, Tristan L\u00f3pez, and Carla H\u00fcttermann, follows a family on summer holiday that are struck by a tragedy that ripples through their lives and relationships. <\/p>\n

\tAnnouncing the award at the Debussy Th\u00e9\u00e2tre Friday night, Un Certain Regard jury president, actress Leila Bekht (A Prophet<\/em>), said Wollner\u2019s film depicted \u201cthe lived experience of grief\u201d noting, \u201cit shook us to our core.\u201d \t<\/p>\n

\tWollner thanked everyone in film who helps artists protect their \u201cweird, strange ideas,\u201d she said. \u201cI think in a time where\u2026.AI is used a lot to produce \u2018same of the same\u2019 because we don\u2019t want to take risks, or because it\u2019s easier, I honestly would like to hold on to those quirky, weird thoughts that maybe don\u2019t make sense in the beginning, but hopefully stay with you, maybe a little longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tProduced by Panama Films and The Barricades, Everytime<\/em> is being sold by Charades worldwide. <\/p>\n

\tElephants in the Fog<\/em>, a Nepalese drama about a community of transgender women, took the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize. In his feature debut, writer-director Abinash Bikram Shah explores the Kinnar community, a legally recognized part of Nepal\u2019s meti \u201cthird gender\u201d, and the nature of trans acceptance in South Asia. Bubbles Project, Zischlermann Filmproduktion, Storm Films, and Jayantii Creations produced. Best Friend Forever is handling world sales. \t<\/p>\n

\tA special jury prize went to Louis Clichy\u2019s Iron Boy<\/em><\/a>, a hand-painted animated feature, about an 11-year-old boy in rural France. Sony Pictures Classics picked up all rights <\/a>in North and Latin America, as well as for India and Southeast Asian TV, to the feature out of Cannes. Iron Boy<\/em> marks Clichy\u2019s first film as a solo director, after many years working as an animator for Pixar on such features as WALL-E<\/em> and Up<\/em>. Playtime is selling worldwide. <\/p>\n

\tThe Un Certain Regard best actor award went to Bradley Fiomona Dembeasset for his turn in Rafiki Fariala\u2019s Congo Boy<\/em>, playing a teen talent in the Central African Republic who dreams of a career in music as a civil war tears his country apart. A joint best actress award went to Marina de Tavira, Daniela Mar\u00edn Navarro, and Mariangel Villegas, the three leads of Valentina Maurel\u2019s Siempre Soy Tu Animal Materno<\/em>, a family drama set in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n

\tThe breakout hit of Un Certain Regard, and the Cannes festival this year, Jordan Firstman\u2019s Club Kid<\/em><\/a>, went home empty handed. Perhaps the jury felt that after near-unanimous critical praise, and a $17 million sale to A24<\/a>, Firstman already had enough to celebrate. <\/p>\n
