Tom Quinn\u2019s indie outfit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/neon-picks-up-sebastian-stan-renate-reinsve-starrer-fjord-1236213944\/\">snatched up <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/fjord\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fjord_1\" data-tag=\"fjord\">Fjord<\/a><\/em> for domestic release<\/a> ahead of this year\u2019s festival.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tAt the press conference right after the ceremony, South Korean director Park Chan-wook, head of the 2026 competition jury, joked he didn\u2019t want to give the Palme d\u2019Or to anyone, \u201cbecause it\u2019s an award that I myself have never gotten.\u201d Then, after a long pause, and referencing his last film, he landed the punch line. \u201cBut I had <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/no-other-choice-review-park-chan-wook-lee-byung-hun-1236357175\/\">No Other Choice<\/a>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tAndre\u00ef Zvyagintsev\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/minotaur-review-andrey-zvyagintsev-1236600974\/\">Minotaur<\/a><\/em>, a reworking of Chabrol\u2019s <em>The Unfaithful Wife<\/em> as an immaculate domestic thriller set against contemporary Russia, took Cannes\u2019 runner-up prize, the Grand Prix. The film follows an executive who is required to sign over his employees to be cannon fodder for the Russian war effort in Ukraine. At the same time, he suspects his wife may be having an affair.<\/p>\n<p> \tZvyaginstev used his acceptance speech to call out Russian President Vladimir Putin and his war. \u201cFor millions of people, contact with art right now is about only one thing: That finally, the senseless killing of people would stop. And the only person who can stop this meat grinder is you, Mr. President of the Russian Federation. Put an end to this slaughter. The whole world is waiting for this.\u201d  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tBest directing honors were shared between Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the co-directors of Spanish musical drama <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-black-ball-review-bola-negra-los-javis-glenn-close-1236603356\/\">La Bola Negra<\/a><\/em>, a Garc\u00eda Lorca-inspired queer epic spanning eras with Pen\u00e9lope Cruz and Glenn Close, and Pawe\u0142 Pawlikowski for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/fatherland-review-sandra-huller-pawel-pawlikowski-1236592480\/\">Fatherland<\/a><\/em>, a chilly, grief-laden film set in 1949 following novelist Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra H\u00fcller) returning to a fractured post-war Germany after years in American exile.<\/p>\n<p> \tThe best actor prize went to newcomers Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne, who play the leads in Lukas Dhont\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/coward-review-lukas-dhont-1236602728\/\">Coward<\/a><\/em>, the WWI drama about queer love in the trenches.<\/p>\n<p> \tBest actress honors were also shared, between French actress Virginie Efira and Japan\u2019s Tao Okamoto, who play the leads in Ryusuke Hamaguchi\u2019s emotional drama <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/all-of-a-sudden-review-ryusuke-hamaguchi-virginie-efira-1236593171\/\">All of a Sudden<\/a><\/em>. Both performers began to tear up when they took the stage to accept their acting Palme.<\/p>\n<p> \tEmmanuel Marre won best screenplay for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/a-man-of-his-time-review-swann-arlaud-emmanuel-marre-1236594681\/\">A Man of His Time<\/a><\/em>, his period drama, based on the life of his own great-grandfather, an author and engineer who chose to work for the fascist Vichy regime.<\/p>\n<p> \tGerman director Valeska Grisebach won the Jury Prize for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-dreamed-adventure-review-valeska-grisebach-1236604538\/\">The Dreamed Adventure<\/a><\/em>, a slow-burn thriller set in Bulgaria, that screened on the final day of the festival. <\/p>\n<p> \tThe Camera d\u2019Or for best first film screening in the official selection, went to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/benimana-review-rwanda-1236598081\/\">Ben\u2019Imana<\/a><\/em> from director Cl\u00e9mentine Dusabejambo, the first director from Rwanda to compete in Cannes. The film explores the pursuit of justice and reconciliation for survivors of the country\u2019s genocide.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \tThe ceremony began with a lifetime achievement award, an honorary Palme d\u2019Or, for legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/barbra-streisand\/\" id=\"auto-tag_barbra-streisand_1\" data-tag=\"barbra-streisand\">\u30d0\u30fc\u30d6\u30e9\u30fb\u30b9\u30c8\u30e9\u30a4\u30b5\u30f3\u30c9<\/a>. Streisand, who is suffering from a knee injury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/barbra-streisand-not-attend-cannes-knee-injury-1236598112\/\">could not attend,<\/a> but at her request, legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert paid tribute to her life and career. Huppert highlighted not only Streisand\u2019s incredible achievements in film, music and on the stage but also her support for the LGBTQ+ community, and religious and ethnic minorities. Huppert\u2019s speech was followed by a highlight reel of Streisand\u2019s five plus decades in film, from <em>Funny Girl <\/em>(1968) and <em>A Star is Born<\/em> (1976) to <em>Yentl<\/em> (1983) and <em>Meet the Fockers<\/em> (2004).<\/p>\n<p> \tAppearing via video, Streisand thanked the Cannes film festival \u201cfor this magnificent award.\u201d She reminisced about watching her first foreign films at her local cinema, the Astor. \u201cI was mesmerized by those images on the screen. They were so powerful that they are still in my head. I wanted to be an actress and live in those more interesting worlds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tRecounting the highlights of her career, Streisand said being a woman and \u201can actress who wanted to direct\u201d was a major obstacle, noting that it took 15 years to bring her passion project, <em>Yentl<\/em>, to the screen. \u201cBut I had to make the movie,\u201d she said. She ended with a celebration of cinema, saying film \u201chas that magic ability to unite us and open up our hearts and minds. That is what we are celebrating in Cannes. Merci beaucoup pour cet honneur et vive le cin\u00e9ma!\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tCannes has often proved a strong predictor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/awards\/\" id=\"auto-tag_awards_1\" data-tag=\"awards\">awards<\/a> season.
