Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid shit usually torpedoes every new movie coming out of the flavorless sausage factory that used to call itself Hollywood,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThese days, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity. Which is fair enough, because by comparison the movies of the last six years make the 80s seem like the 30s.\u201d   \t<\/p>\n<p> \tTarantino cited a few films that he\u2019s seen since the pandemic that he\u2019s \u201cliked,\u201d still noting that none have really caught his eye \u2014 except for one.<\/p>\n<p> \t\u201cI\u2019ve seen movies I\u2019ve liked since then \u2014 <em>West Side Story <\/em>(2021); <em>Horizon: An American Saga \u2014 Chapter 1 &#038; 2 <\/em>(both 2024), a few others, but nothing that really held me in its grip and swept me away to the magical land of enjoyment that I used to visit and was the reason why I loved movies above all artforms,\u201d Tarantino said. \u201cThese days I\u2019d rather read a book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tThe \u201csuspenseful new movie\u201d that self-admittedly grabbed the Oscar winner \u201cand held me for its entire duration\u201d was Joe Carnahan\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-rip-review-matt-damon-ben-affleck-netflix-teyana-taylor-1236474437\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Rip<\/a><\/em> for Netflix, which stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/matt-damon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_matt-damon_1\" data-tag=\"matt-damon\">Matt Damon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ben-affleck\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ben-affleck_1\" data-tag=\"ben-affleck\">Ben Affleck<\/a>.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \t\u201cThe film is an exciting cop thriller with a novel premise that manages to deliver the goods in really clever ways,\u201d Tarantino wrote of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/the-rip\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-rip_1\" data-tag=\"the-rip\">The Rip<\/a><\/em>. \u201cThe whole package worked for me: Carnahan\u2019s direction, the splendid cast, the look of the film (courtesy of cinematographer Juan Miguel Azpiroz) \u2014 but the real powerhouse component of this splendid collection is the sensational screenplay by Carnahan and Michael McGrale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \t<em>The Rip<\/em> recently made headlines as Damon and Affleck\u2019s production company is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/matt-damon-ben-affleck-the-rip-defamation-lawsuit-netflix-1236594180\/\">facing a defamation lawsuit<\/a> from two Miami-Dade police officers who claimed the movie has caused them reputational damage because its content blends fictionalized details with facts from their real-life experiences.<\/p>\n<p> \tAs for Tarantino, the director is in the midst of working on his <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/arts\/quentin-tarantino-play-popinjay-cavalier-west-end-tickets-1236527319\/\">first stage play<\/a>, <em>The Popinjay Cavalier<\/em>, which will open on London\u2019s\u00a0West End\u00a0in 2027.
