\tTwo unions with journalist members at CBS News<\/a> are decrying management under new owner Paramount Skydance following the firing of journalists at 60\u5206<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

\tSAG-AFTRA, the labor<\/a> organization representing around 75 correspondents, anchors and hosts at the news outlet, including at 60\u5206<\/em>, said it condemned leadership\u2019s \u201ccontinued assault on the foundations of CBS News\u201d in a statement on Thursday. <\/p>\n

\tThe labor organization added that it was \u201cprepared to take and support any and all legal actions related to the company\u2019s conduct over the last several weeks,\u201d arguing that workers have a right to speak up on behalf of colleagues regarding issues in the workplace. <\/p>\n

\tThe statement arrived after after CBS News fired former 60\u5206 <\/em>correspondent Scott Pelley following a clash with leadership<\/a> in a tense meeting earlier this week. <\/p>\n

\tPelley was fired by CBS management after he laid into new 60\u5206<\/em> boss Nick Bilton and CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss in a heated staff meeting<\/a>. The journalist said Weiss was \u201cmurdering\u201d the show. \u201cShe does not love this place, she was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that,\u201d he said. Pelley also told Bilton he had \u201cslender\u201d qualifications for the executive producer role he now holds.<\/p>\n

\tThe meeting followed a transformation of 60\u5206<\/em> under Weiss\u2019 leadership, with executive producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi\u00a0all being fired in May.<\/p>\n

\tSAG-AFTRA framed recent moves from the company including layoffs and the closing of CBS News Radio<\/a> in late May as \u201cpart of a broader strategy to gut the crucial independent journalism that is so important to our democratic system.\u201d The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has reached out to CBS News for comment.<\/p>\n

\tThe fiery remarks from the performers\u2019 union followed an equally blistering statement from the president of the Writers Guild of America<\/a> East on Thursday. Tom Fontana, the showrunner and writer leading the union, claimed \u201cnear-constant levels of editorial interference\u201d at CBS News under new management. <\/p>\n

\t\u201cLike many of you, I have been alarmed by recent developments at CBS News,\u201d Fontana wrote his members, citing layoffs and the shuttering of CBS News Radio<\/a>. \u201cIn addition, based on a string of public reporting and confidential reports from WGAE members, it is clear that CBS brass is engaged in a near-constant level of editorial interference that would have previously been unthinkable,\u201d Fontana said.<\/p>\n

\tA CBS News spokesperson pushed back against that characterization, stating,\u00a0\u201cThere is no political interference at\u00a0CBS\u00a0News, not from ownership, not from Bari Weiss. The only \u2018interference\u2019 is the normal back and forth between editor and correspondent that happens in every newsroom.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\tThe WGA East says it represents around 275 news writers, desk associates and assignment editors at the news outlet.<\/p>\n

\tOf Pelley, an icon of the newsmagazine and a 37-year veteran of the network, Fontana said, \u201cCBS management is apparently too thin-skinned to handle the honest scrutiny of their own journalists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tTo Fontana, the moves represented more than \u201cideological interference\u201d in stories. He said, \u201cThey display a profound contempt for the journalism profession, for our members who have dedicated their lives to informing the public about the world, and for the ethics that underpin true journalism, chief among them honesty, integrity, and objectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\tThe union leader concluded his message by telling CBS News workers that they are \u201cnot alone\u201d and that \u201cwe will be there with you when this difficult time in American life passes, and we will help you build what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n
