{"id":2999,"date":"2026-06-05T23:19:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/2026\/06\/05\/netflix-film-head-says-streamer-has-accepted-they-wont-work-with-filmmakers-who-still-want-theatrical-releases\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T23:19:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T23:19:00","slug":"netflix-film-head-says-streamer-has-accepted-they-wont-work-with-filmmakers-who-still-want-theatrical-releases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsmag.live\/ja\/2026\/06\/05\/netflix-film-head-says-streamer-has-accepted-they-wont-work-with-filmmakers-who-still-want-theatrical-releases\/","title":{"rendered":"Netflix Film Head Says Streamer Has \u201cAccepted\u201d They Won\u2019t Work With \u201cFilmmakers Who Still Want Theatrical\u201d Releases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p> \t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/dan-lin\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dan-lin_1\" data-tag=\"dan-lin\">Dan Lin<\/a>, chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix_1\" data-tag=\"netflix\">Netflix<\/a> film, opened up about the streamer\u2019s decision to give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/greta-gerwig\/\" id=\"auto-tag_greta-gerwig_1\" data-tag=\"greta-gerwig\">Greta Gerwig<\/a>\u2018s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/narnia\/\" id=\"auto-tag_narnia_1\" data-tag=\"narnia\">Narnia<\/a><\/em> movie a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/netflix-narnia-movie-greta-gerwig-release-date-1236581880\/\">wide theatrical release<\/a> in a new profile with <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/04\/business\/media\/dan-lin-netflix-hollywood.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>, assuring the outlet that the move was an \u201cexception\u201d and not a hint at its future rollout strategy. <\/p>\n<p> \tLin <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/netflix-movies-dan-lin-1235843320\/\">joined Netflix<\/a> in April 2024, taking over the reins from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/scott-stuber-departing-netflix-as-film-head-4072996\/\">Scott Stuber<\/a>, who shifted the streaming service into the blockbuster space. When discussing the <em>Barbie<\/em> director\u2019s upcoming <em>Narnia<\/em> film, the Netflix film boss told the <em>Times<\/em> that he knows there are directors and filmmakers who value theatrical releases that the company will not be able to work with.  \t<\/p>\n<p> \t\u201cThere is a group of filmmakers who still want theatrical,\u201d Lin said. \u201cThose are filmmakers that we\u2019ve accepted we just won\u2019t work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \tGerwig\u2019s adaptation of the fantasy novel was originally slated to be released in Imax theaters on Thanksgiving before arriving on Netflix on Christmas\u00a0Day. However, in May, the streamer revealed that the film will release on Feb. 12, 2027, and later go to Netflix on April 2, 2027, marking its first film to have a traditional theatrical release.<\/p>\n<p> \tNetflix\u2019s theatrical strategy, or lack thereof, was a major point of contention when the streamer was in the running to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Before the streaming giant <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/netflix-backs-out-warners-deal-paramount-win-1236516763\/\">dropped out<\/a> of the bidding war, leaving Paramount as the winner, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said that Warner Bros. films would have the standard <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/cinemark-ceo-apprehensive-on-netflix-45-day-window-promise-1236508631\/\">45-day theatrical window<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> \tElsewhere, the streamer\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/quentin-tarantino-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-brad-pitt-1236178785\/\">Cliff Booth movie<\/a>, directed by David Fincher from a script by\u00a0Quentin Tarantino based on Brad Pitt\u2018s\u00a0<em>Once Upon a Time in Hollywood\u00a0<\/em>stuntman character, will have a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/cliff-booth-movie-imax-run-1236602615\/\">short theatrical run<\/a>. <em>The Adventures of Cliff Booth<\/em> (the movie\u2019s working title) will have a two-week Imax run globally starting Nov. 25, before hitting Netflix on Dec. 23.   \t<\/p>\n<p> \tUnder his leadership, the <em>Times<\/em> also outlined that Lin wants Netflix to \u201cspend less money on fewer, better movies.\u201d Lin also said in the profile that he\u2019d like the streamer to develop more comedies, rom-coms and book adaptations, with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/people-we-meet-on-vacation-review-netflix-emily-henry-1236466497\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People We Meet on Vacation<\/a><\/em> serving as a recent example of a success for the streamer. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Lin, chairman of Netflix film, opened up about the streamer\u2019s decision to give Greta Gerwig\u2018s Narnia movie a\u00a0wide theatrical release in a new profile with The New York Times, assuring the outlet that the move was an \u201cexception\u201d and not a hint at its future rollout strategy.
