They captured the social pressures and responsibilities that teens struggled against in high school, giving them permission to accept the messy reality of their lives and embrace the present. <em>Ferris Bueller\u2019s Day Off<\/em>, which was released in theaters 40 years ago on June 11, 1986, was the epitome of all that. As Matthew Broderick memorably said in the title role: \u201cLife moves pretty fast. If you don\u2019t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tThe movie follows Ferris Bueller, a kid who has his parents, and most everyone else, wrapped around his little finger. He has perfected the art of faking illness, and uses this scheme to skip school and enjoy one last day in Chicago with his girlfriend (Sloane, played by Mia Sara) and his best friend (the high-strung Cameron, played by Alan Ruck), before the guys graduate. Among their exploits, the trio go to a Cubs game, a fine dining restaurant, the Art Institute of Chicago and a downtown parade, where Ferris commandeers a float and lip syncs to \u201cDanke Schoen\u201d for the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tAnd why not? In the cyber-thriller, he plays a student who, while trying to hack into a video game, accidentally breaks into a military computer and nearly starts a nuclear war. The same year, he became the youngest actor to win a Tony for best featured actor in a play for <em>Brighton Beach Memoirs<\/em>. <em>Ferris Bueller <\/em>quickly became another calling card for the young actor, as he played the ultimate slacker with a heart of gold, outwitting his high school principal (Jeffery Jones) and antagonizing his sister (Jennifer Grey) in pursuit of a good time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tIn \u201987, personal tragedy struck when Broderick and Grey, who were dating at the time, got in a serious car accident while vacationing in Northern Ireland. Two people in the other car were killed, while Broderick and Grey were both injured. In the years since the accident, Broderick (who was driving) has spoken of it only rarely, but has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2002\/09\/02\/brodericks-guilt-actor-to-meet-with-irish-kin-of-fatal-87-car-wreck\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">expressed remorse<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240727094325\/https:\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/fermanagh-car-crash-endeddirty-dancing-stars-career-jjf7tdc60j7\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">what happened.<\/a> The couple broke up not long afterward, and Broderick went on to marry Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997. The couple, who have three children, starred together on Broadway in Neil Simon\u2019s <em>Plaza Suite <\/em>in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tBroderick continued to be an in-demand leading actor, starring opposite Helen Hunt in <em>Project X<\/em> (1987), about an Air Force project involving chimps, followed by a role as an Army recruit in <em>Biloxi Blues <\/em>(1988), a part he had previously played on Broadway. He re-upped in the military for <em>Glory<\/em> (1989), playing the commander of a Black unit in the Union Army during the Civil War, with co-stars including Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. A few years later, Broderick was Emmy-nominated for a TV movie version of <em>A Life in the Theatre<\/em> (1993), in which he starred opposite Jack Lemmon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tIn the Disney classic <em>The Lion King<\/em> (1994), Broderick voiced adult Simba, and in <em>The Cable Guy<\/em> (1996), he played a poor sap who gets more than he bargained for when Jim Carrey\u2019s titular character hooks him up with free cable. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/reese-witherspoon-election-tracy-flick-25-years-1235880541\/\">1999\u2019s <em>Election<\/em>,<\/a> the tables were turned on an actor best known as a slacker student when he played the high school social studies teacher in the cult comedy starring Reese Witherspoon. That year, he also played the title character in a live-action feature version of <em>Inspector Gadget.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tA regular presence on the Broadway stage, Broderick won a second Tony for <em>How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying<\/em> in 1995. He would go on to star opposite Nathan Lane in <em>The Producers <\/em>in 2001, and reprised the part in the 2005 film version of the musical about two men trying to get rich by intentionally producing a Broadway flop. During this time, he also found time to play Walter, the husband of Nicole Kidman\u2019s Joanna, in <em>The Stepford Wives<\/em> (2004). Broderick\u2019s film r\u00e9sum\u00e9 also includes<em> The Tale of Desperaux<\/em> (2008), <em>Tower Heist<\/em> (2011), <em>Manchester by the Sea<\/em> (2016) and <em>Painkiller<\/em> (2023). The actor had already appeared in half a dozen movies and TV movies before <em>Bueller<\/em>, making his debut in <em>Bad Boys <\/em>(1983) \u2014 not the one you\u2019re thinking about, this one centers on a reform school and stars Sean Penn. He also already knew co-star Broderick, as they performed together on Broadway in <em>Biloxi Blues<\/em> in 1985.<\/p>\n<p> \tAfter the success of <em>Ferris Bueller<\/em>, Ruck starred opposite Charlie Sheen (who also had a small but memorable part in <em>Bueller<\/em>, see below) and Kerri Green in road-trip dramedy<em> Three for the Road<\/em> (1987) and appeared in <em>Three Fugitives<\/em> (1989), a comedy led by Nick Nolte and Martin Short about bank robbers on the run, among other films. He appeared as a tourist in <em>Speed<\/em> (1994), and the same year played the captain of the Enterprise-B in the feature <em>Star Trek: Generations<\/em>. That was soon followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lists\/1996-twister-cast-where-are-they-now\/\"><em>Twister<\/em> (1996),<\/a> the classic tornado-chasing disaster film in which he played Robert \u201cRabbit\u201d Nurick.<\/p>\n<p> \tRuck\u2019s next memorable project was <em>Spin City<\/em>, in which he played the lovably sleazy Stuart Bondek for the show\u2019s entire run, from 1996-2002. After the sitcom wrapped, he played a neighbor of the central family in <em>Cheaper by the Dozen<\/em> (2003), a school principal in M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s <em>The Happening<\/em> (2008) and a ghost dad in the Ricky Gervais-starring <em>Ghost Town<\/em> (2008). During the aughts and 2010s, he also kept busy appearing on shows like <em>NCIS<\/em>, <em>Psych<\/em>, <em>Burn Notice<\/em>, <em>Cougar Town<\/em>, <em>Boston Legal<\/em> and <em>Scrubs<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tAfter bouncing around for a few years in this way, zeitgeist-capturing success struck again when Ruck joined HBO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-features\/succession-alan-ruck-connor-wedding-logan-roy-death-1235371280\/\">smash-hit <em>Succession<\/em>,<\/a> which ran from 2018-23. He played Connor Roy, the politically inclined half-sibling who is an outsider in his own family and eventually runs for president. Ruck shared in the series\u2019 awards riches, snagging an Emmy nomination and joining the cast in winning two SAG Awards for the ensemble.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tOn Broadway, Ruck replaced Broderick as Leo Bloom in <em>The Producers<\/em> in 2005 and starred as Sidney in <em>Absurd Person Singular<\/em>, which opened later that year. He met his wife, Mireille Enos, while working on the latter play, and the couple share two children. Notably, in the time-travel sci-fi action movie <em>Timecop<\/em> (1994), she played star Jean-Claude Van Damme\u2019s wife, whose murder is a pivot point in the plot.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tIn the horror movie <em>The Maddening<\/em> (1995), Sara played a young mother held hostage by an insane couple. She also worked on numerous TV movies and miniseries, including 1997\u2019s <em>20,000 Leagues Under the Sea<\/em>, and later played Harley Quinn on The WB\u2019s <em>Birds of Prey<\/em> (2002-03). She starred with Ron Perlman in <em>Hoodlum &#038; Son <\/em>(2003), a 1930s-set mob drama, and played an ally of the Wicked Witch of the West in <em>Dorothy and the Witches of Oz <\/em>(2012), in which an adult Dorothy realizes the popular books are based on suppressed experiences from her youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tSara now lives in England, where she <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/ferris-bueller-star-mia-sara-life-out-of-spotlight-life-of-chuck-exclusive-11750970\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">writes poetry<\/a>, and recently returned to the screen in Mike Flanagan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/the-life-of-chuck-review-tom-hiddleston-mike-flanagan-1235994900\/\"><em>The Life of Chuck<\/em><\/a> (2024) after an 11-year absence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tShe is married to Brian Henson, the son of Jim Henson, with whom she has a daughter. He directed her in the 2001 miniseries <em>Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story<\/em>. She was previously married to Jason Connery, Sean Connery\u2019s son, after they co-starred with Michael Caine in the TV movie <em>Bullet to Beijing<\/em> (1995). But 1987, the year after <em>Bueller<\/em> came out, was when she truly made her mark as Baby in <em>Dirty Dancing<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tAfter the iconic film co-starring Patrick Swayze, Grey would struggle to reach those pop-culture defining heights again. She starred in <em>Bloodhounds of Broadway<\/em> (1989) along with Matt Dillon, Madonna and Ruck, followed by a string of TV movies. In the feature film <em>Wind<\/em> (1992), a romantic drama about yacht races, she starred opposite Matthew Modine. She moved to Los Angeles when she decided to make the switch to improv acting, and worked with The Groundlings before landing her first film role in <em>Carrie<\/em> (1976).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tThe actress met John Hughes while working on 1983\u2019s <em>Mr. Mom<\/em>, for which he was the screenwriter. That led to numerous collaborations, including <em>Bueller<\/em> and 1987\u2019s <em>Planes, Trains &#038; Automobiles<\/em>, in which she played a Midwestern car rental agent who refuses to take Steve Martin\u2019s attitude. She also played the ever-cheerful neighbor Mrs. Poole on the sitcom <em>Valerie<\/em>, which ran from 1986-91 (also known as<em> The Hogan Family<\/em>). She appeared in popular films including <em>Elvira: Mistress of the Dark<\/em> (1988), <em>A River Runs Through It<\/em> (1992) and <em>Natural Born Killers<\/em> (1994).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tA prolific voice actor, McClurg performed in such animated movies as <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em> (1989), as Prince Eric\u2019s maid; <em>A Bug\u2019s Life<\/em> (1998) as Dr. Flora; the <em>Cars<\/em> franchise as Minny the minivan; <em>Wreck-It Ralph<\/em> (2012) as the Nicelander Mary; and <em>Frozen<\/em> (2013) as a castle servant. She voiced characters on television, too, including on <em>Higglytown Heroes<\/em>, <em>Clifford the Big Red Dog<\/em>, <em>13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo<\/em> and <em>The Addams Family<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \tMcClurg is retired and reportedly has been diagnosed with dementia.
